Alpinestars Al-Mega
Hardtail mountain bike
Status: Rebuild in progress
Description:
My first realmountain bike, purchased from my friend Mike. Retured due to a broken front derailleur hanger (the bike uses a braze-on front derailleur). The hanger has since been repaired, and the bike awaits a rebuild
Update:
After some rough spots, I finally got the Alpinestars rebuilt. One problem was my "repaired" front derailleur braze-on. The repaired version was a but too thin, and not curved enough, so under cable tension the derailleur would rotate until the cage hit the chainring. I tried tightening the bolt more, but it broke, but not before deforming the braze-on tab a bit.
I've resigned myself to the fact that I'll probably never be able to run a front derailleur, but honestly, I don't think I really need one. So for now I've installed a 3rd eye chain watcher to prevent the chain from dropping down onto the small ring. If that's not enough, I'll go with a full-bore tensioner/idler. I'll probably also replace the big ring with a bash guard at some point. More pics of the bike can be seen here.
